Artist Robert Morris Talks About His Beginnings in New York

I wanted to stuff time back into the objects I was making with me hands. — Robert Morris

The New York Public Library hosted an evening event recently, one in their artist dialogue series, that featured the renowned American artist Robert Morris in conversation with Julia Robinson, Assistant Professor of Art History at New York University, and Jeffrey Weiss, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Guggenheim Museum.  Weiss is also the author of our recently-published Robert Morris: Object Sculpture 1960-1965.

The discussion focused on the crucial early period in the long and storied career of Mr. Morris, one of the country’s most important artists in the minimal, post-minimal, and conceptual art movements. From spending his first New York winter in a cold Chambers St. loft owned by Yoko Ono to sharing an apartment with Yvonne Rainer and hobnobbing with the likes of John Cage and Jasper Johns, Morris shared takes from his experiences as a young artist in New York in this special appearance.
